It’s for creative, resourceful people who like to tinker and love to make things. Experience it here, in the birthplace and showplace of one of the world’s most famous tinkerers, Henry Ford. Regular adult tickets are only $28 for all day admission to Maker Faire AND Henry Ford Museum!

Maker Faire Mission: To inspire, inform, connect and entertain thousands of Makers and aspiring Makers of all ages and backgrounds through the public gathering of tech enthusiast, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, science clubs, students, authors, and commercial exhibitors.

Back to the Craft Season

Now the weather is getting warmer. It also means I am back in full gear for an exciting craft season. This spring and summer I will be selling my hand-made goodies in Canton Farmers Market (Preservation Park, 500 N. Ridge Road) once a month.

The Canton Farmers Market offers a wonderful variety of home grown foods and hand-made goods. The local growers, producers and farmers offer vegetable, fruits, herbs, bulbs, grains, meats, plants, and much more.

Organic items are also available, including: honey, syrups, and produce. A talented group of artists and crafts people have outstanding goods available for purchase, including: wreaths, center-pieces, as well as fresh cut flowers.

Canton Farmers Market is held every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m from May 9th to October 17th. I will be vending there on May 23rd, June 13th, July 18th, August 15th, September 12th and October 3rd. Hope to see you there!

We Slept a Lot During This Past Holiday

I know I have not been too active on my blog lately. I was busy for couple of my favorite craft shows over the holiday season and finished one wedding favor order. After that I needed a well-deserved break. I temporarily closed my online store for two weeks. It was wonderful doing absolutely nothing for a while. Now I am back and ready to create some new items. I really enjoy making miniature Choo-Choo the Owl using polymer clays. I am going to concentrate using that medium for beginning of this year, offer couple free giveaways here and fulfill some orders for few retail stores. In the meantime, I will share some photos taken at the holiday craft shows from last year (wow… 2009 is last year already!).

I know I have not posted a new blog for a long time. But I have not disappeared from the craft worlds. As a matter of fact, I have been very busy. Other than attending several craft shows in MI and Canton's Sunday Farmer Market, I also worked on several weddings (wedding invitation, favors and etc.). I am going to try to organize some photos and post them in the next few weeks. In the meantime, I am getting ready for one of my favorite shows, Detroit Urban Craft Fair, on Saturday November 21st in Majestic Theater at 10 AM.

The Detroit Urban Craft Fair is an alternative craft fair featuring 50+ independent, DIY artists and crafters. DUCF exists around a community market feel, encouraging the interaction of maker and buyer, while showcasing a wealth of handmade and local talent. Simply put, we aren’t your typical arts and craft fair. DUCF is run by Handmade Detroit, an urban craft collective for people who like to make stuff. Handmade Detroit exists to create community and opportunities around Detroit’s DIY makers.

I love the ladies from Handmade Detroit. I joined them at the Detroit Movement (Electronic Festival) and DIY Street Fair this past summer. And as always I had a blast. Therefore, I look forward to the DUCF and I am putting my Halloween outfit together and if nothing happens, I will be seeing everyone at Carey's ZOMBIE DANCE PARTY - SATURDAY OCTOBER 31st @ The MAGIC STICK!

New Improvements on My Bag/Luggage Tags

After receiving helpful feedback from my customers, I’ve been searching for a new instrument to hang my bag/luggage tags other than the 4” silver ball chain. I am glad to announce the hunt is over. My bag/luggage will be BETTER than ever! Starting in mid September, all of bag/luggage tags will come with a 6” Stainless Steel Wire Keyrings (instead of a 4” silver ball chain) that have easy-open and easy-lock round screw heads. Twice a year Corner Brewery in Ypsilanti plays host to the Shadow Art Fair organized by Michigan Design Militia, a 12-hour juried event that features live music and a cornucopia of locally produced artsy stuff. This year's SAF was one of the best that I’d ever been to. I was really happy and lucky to be a part of it. Inspired? Some Thoughts on Selling at the Canton Farmers Market

Customers love signs and explanations. You must label everything with a name and a price. For some reason, items without prices don’t sell well. Many people are too shy to ask directly about prices. Customers do expect value for money. Offer discounts when you have a lot of something, or throw in something small for free. Wear your own creation. You should be proud of what you made. You shouldn’t sell anything that you won’t wear or use it yourself. Give customers personal opinions. You must be able to answer objective questions – does this necklace looks good against a light color shirt? Will these earrings look nice against their skin complexion? The customer will thank you for it. Ultimately, farmers markets will not succeed simply because we are local vendors and the folks down the road are not. They will succeed because the produce/product is superior to what consumers can buy elsewhere and the price is right. So quality is everything! Be cheerful and active. A bored, sullen person behind the counter is fatal, be enthusiastic and friendly. You must move about the stand. Walk to the front of your stand every ten minutes for the customer’s view. Pick up trash, even if it’s not yours. You must demonstrate your high opinion of your products. Even if it is a slow day, the weather is usually nice in the summer. I will grab a book, read and enjoy the sunshine and being around with the people from your community. I simply love being in Farmers Markets.

Job Well Done

I recently finished a 300 luggage tag order for a wedding in California. It took couple months of communications, preparations and hard work. I was pretty happy when I finally packaged them and sent them out. Upon my cat, Noodle's inspection and granted his OK by meowing to me, those two boxes were ready for their destination. I hope Jen and Chris' had a wonderful time at the wedding and their guests love the wedding favors, which showcased photos taken at their historical wedding/reception location.

Part Time Crafter Tips - Part 2

As a part-time crafter, I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on displays. Therefore, I’ve been trying to find inventive ways to save money on displays. Although I don’t have a fancy display, like some vendors, it has served me well. Over the years, I collected some leftover small wooden blocks from construction sites or from friends/neighbors, who’re building houses or furniture. I used them underneath the tablecloth to create levels of heights. Wooden blocks are strong and sturdy enough to withhold heavy objects. To grab customer’s attention as they glace around the craft show, it’s important to set your feature item at eye level, about five feet high.

I also have a small 4 feet folding table I purchased from a discount store. Think it only costs me less than $20 and very easy to carry around. I use it wherever the craft show doesn’t supply tables. Although the typical table size for craft shows is 6 feet, it is too large and heavy for a 5’1 person like myself to carry alone. A 4 feet table sounds small, and crafters with many products are often tempted to lay them all out and crowd in as many different things as they can. I would strongly encourage you not to do that. It is better to show a few products in groups and leave some space around. Your mind will keep organized if there’s a gap between items. To many choices of the same items will just keep the browser keep on looking. Keep some items in storage under the table, so you can meet a variety of needs and restock the table later. You’ll find as long as you keep your table nice and neat, the size of table is not an issue.

Many customers have complimented on how beautiful my tablecloth is and ask me if I sell tablecloths. :) Although I don’t, it certainly draws customer’s attention to me. It is actually made from a leftover upholstery fabric, which I have the habit of collecting. My grandma sometimes used the fabric I collected and made them into school bags or blankets for children in poor countries. I can’t think of a better way to recycle and reuse those fabrics. Leftover upholstery fabric often is too small to be used on any furniture and they’re incredibly durable and some are even waterproof. You can also make them into small squares of coasters or wall art (with wood frames). Therefore, I recommend you to check out any local independent custom furniture stores if you know one. Just make sure to use a pleasant color for your table covering.

Jewelry stands...whatever style you choose, the factor of elevation should help to create an appealing display. I display my earrings and Choo-Choo the Owl charms on a metal tree, which I found in a garage sale. It is actually a candleholder, but it works as a jewelry display extremely well. It makes customers stop and look – the first step to enticing a sale. Garage sales really are a good place to find displays if you’re on a tight budge. Be unique and creative and don’t forget to wear a piece of jewelry you make to show it off.

Metal panels are also a very good way to display jewelries. I found them 50% off online and purchased the stands for those panels at the general dollar store. I use thumbtacks and small magnets to hang the necklaces and pendants. You can also purchase a big piece of pegboard from hardware stores, such as Home Depot, and have them cut into small pieces for you. A 2’ by 4’ aluminum or stainless pegboard will cost you around $50, but you can get a wood one for less than $10.

Part Time Crafter Tips - Part 1

I attended quite a few numbers of craft show last year as a vendor. I also did local farmers markets during the summer. It was an enjoyable and learning experience every time. Throughout the process I’ve refined my products, prices and displays to become a better and more successful vendor. Therefore, I thought I will share few simple Craft Fair Tips I've learned here. I am not an expert. At each event, I always make sure I find someone who can sit in my table for a moment while I walk around the show. See which vendor’s table catch my attention and make a mental note as to why. If I notice a particular vendor is busy, I will see if they have an idea I can adapt to my own display. Most importantly, say "HI" to all the fellow crafters. It’s nice to know there are others, who share my passion in crafting!

The most common and tough question I ask myself is always… ”How much should I sell it for?” Crafting should always be an outlet for enjoying yourself. It shouldn’t be a stressful experience. Make sure you keep receipts from the purchase of all your materials. Record how much of each material you used for each item, and how long it took you to make it. Add these all up; this is the cost of your product. In general, your selling price is multiply the cost by 2 or 3 times. It is also a good idea to check if your selling prices are competitive with your competition. Because each vendor might have different costs for his/her products, don’t be surprise to see a similar product you sell, being sold by another vendor for $5 to $10 more or less. If you need to reduce or increase the price, make sure you don’t lose money and it’s reasonable.

I’ve learned in the past, put a price tag on EVERY item is extremely important. I used to place a sign with the prices, but it’s not visible enough. Although some customers may ask, most will just put the item back and move on. Ever since I placed a price tag on each item, it increases my sales drastically. Most customers, who liked my product but were still indecisive, made the purchase as soon as they saw the price. If you want to keep a customer’s interest, don’t make them search for the price especially when you are busy with another customers.

Having a nice display is also very important. It should be obvious that just laying your products flat on the table will not be eye catching. I will be sharing my experiences on that topic next time. I hope you enjoy the part 1. :D

Bake-Off Extravaganza

I recently host a bake-off party at my humble little apartment. I created little scorecards and cute recipe cards for each guest to take home with. The first annual Bake-Off Extravaganza was a huge success! We had 12 entries in the contest. All of guests got to play judges and taste everything.

The top honor went to Christine’s Apple Tart, which was eye pleasing as well as delicious! Rounding out the top three was Jeanette’s Cheesecake and savory Hors d'œuvre and Melanie’s Biscotti.

Thanks to all of those who made it out this year! It was a wonderful time, and we couldn’t have asked for better weather. A special thanks goes to those, who brought folding chairs. I had a lot of fun and can’t wait to do it again.

DUCF brings 65+ alternative crafters and artists to the Fillmore Detroit (formerly the State Theatre). Michigan’s first and largest celebration of DIYers, indie crafters and alternative artists — whatever they are calling it these days — DUCF is the best place to see, experience and get involved with the vibrant community of makers right here in the mitten state.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. All ages.

Last night I fell love with… HBO’s new sexy, scary new drama, ‘True Blood’. Besides Dr. Who (David Tennant), Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) soon becomes my new favorite TV leading man. 'True Blood,' created by Alan Ball (Six Feet Under), is a story about vampires revealed themselves to the world after a Japanese scientist invented synthetic blood because they no longer need to feed on human. The central story is happening in the small Louisiana town of Bon Temps and involving two main characters, a local waitress, Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who is "Cursed" with the ability to listen in on people's thoughts, and Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), a handsome 173-year-old living up the road.
Since the new season of Dr. Who won’t be back until 2010 and there are 4 more months before the final season of Battlestar Galactica comes back, Sunday night on HBO is now my MUST see TV.

After graduating with a Bachelor degree in Graphic Design for 6 years, I decided it’s time to go back to school to update my skill sets this Fall. If I had the money to splurge, these will be the my ultimate Back to School gears:

We're Moving!

Gary and I are moving! Right now our townhouse is full of boxes. And I have not had the energy to clean the house. I’ve been separating our stuff into three piles: the things go to the basement of our parent’s, the things we’re taking and the things to be sorted out for donation, recycle or garage sales. The new place is much smaller. That means we need more shelving units to better organize our space. I am practically living in Ikea nowadays, trying to find solutions to maximize our new place. Gary and I both have passion for eco-living, minimizing our impact on the environment. Our new place would be within walking distance to a farmer’s market, hair salons, gym and a small convenient store. We are excited, but still have a lot to do before making the new place a comfortable home.

I love designing party/wedding invitations and favors and organizing the event. My dream job would be a party/wedding planner. With the advantages of being a graphic designer, I can offer my expertise on creating the invitations, menus and even favors. Moreover, I can offer a more reasonable price to the happy couple or the party/event host on creating those items myself, rather than hiring outside vendors. Needless to say, I had an awesome time putting together my brother��s 35th birthday this year. Currently, I am working on custom wedding favors for a couple in Chicago who are getting married in the end of August. I put a lot of effort and love into the whole project. I hope when they receive the final products, they would love them as much as I do.

Canton Farmers Market

July 20th and August 3rd's Canton Farmers Market (at the historic Bartlett-Travis house, located at 500 N. Ridge Road, Canton, MI 48187) were a success! I truly enjoyed getting to know the Canton community better and its people. It was a wonderful experience. I would like to thank repeated customers, who came to see me, your patronage and compliments really made my day. The horrible sunburn on my shoulder resulted from 4 hours of sun exposure seems to be quite worthy. Ha ha�� I ought to remember to put sunscreen on my back the next time.

I will be at the Canton Farmers Market again on August 24th (Village Faire is also on the 24th) from 10 AM to 5 PM to sell handmade goods. And I am glad to announce that I will also be there on September 7th, 28th and October 12th. Please come out and support local vendors if you can. Thank you very much!

This little Choo-Choo is hand crafted by me using polymer clays. It sits on its own and can be made into a pendant, key chain or cell phone charm. My goal is making the whole family of Choo-Choo in different colors. If I am up to it, maybe I will make an owl house to go with it! LOL

Currently, I am working on the third illustrated character, Mao-Mao. It will be a kitty cat. As for what kind of cat, I am still marinated on that. My cat, Noodle, has been keeping me company during those late night hours of making custom orders. Mao-Mao probably would be a reflection of him.

The Art of Drinking Tea

I grew up watching my step-dad properly made tea and sat around the dining table with my mom, sipping tea and enjoying some biscuits. The family would savour the moment… no matter what type of day we were having, a cup of tea always gives us a feeling of well-being. Tea’s subtle aromas and vibrant flavours bring good memories of childhood every time. Last year my husband, Gary, and I went to Taiwan for a visit. Step-dad hospitably brought up his favorite tea set and brewed us some almost every morning. It made an impression on Gary. Even months after we've been back in the States, he's constantly craving for a cup of good strong tea. He and I enjoy tea from time to time now. Although it’s not half as good as what step-dad makes, it still reminds us of home and makes us ponder life.

Feeling Betrayed?

At some point in our lives, we might find out that one or some of our friends aren't as good a friend as we have thought. This can become apparent in many ways. We might realize that they aren't there for us when we are in need. They might cancel a preplanned get-together at last minute for another offer. They might also betray our trust.

Most of us feel closer to some friends than others, but whether by your best friend or a casual acquaintance, being betrayed feels awful. If you can't trust your friends, whom can you trust?

I’ve always been proud of myself for having friends like the fab four from the hit cable series, Sex and the City. The ladies enjoy gossiping and sharing their personal experiences and details. They chat among themselves freely because they know no secrets will ever go beyond the four of them. My friends and I also possess that unspoken mutual understanding. Or so I thought. I recently discovered one of my closest friends has been, intentionally or otherwise, a double-crosser.

Needless to say, I felt hurt and disappointed. When I first suspected it, I was able to let things roll off my back, seeing the betrayal as an insignificant indiscretion. As the actions got more serious and blatant, I started contemplating how I should handle our friendship: I could keep wondering and dwelling on my thoughts until I resent her. I could decide that our friendship is worth getting past the betrayal and hurt feelings. Or I could perhaps confront her, letting her know how her actions has affected me and the loved ones. Or I could continue to turn the other cheek, ignoring the fact that she has betrayed my trust and go on with the friendship as usual. I could cut her loose and move on without expressing my feelings or listening to the explanations for her actions. Or finally, I could choose to be vindictive and betray her trust as she betrayed mine. The last option wouldn't be the healthiest, as it would not change the fact that I have been betrayed.

I guess there is no right or wrong way to deal with the situation. But how I deal with it will represent what type of person I am. In the end, I have chosen to pretend I don't know she has betrayed my trust. I will continue be civil and cordial towards her, but she'll never get to know anything personal about me ever again. And just maybe karma will take care of the rest.

Gray Wolves No Longer Endangered!

Gray wolves in the Northern Rockies will be removed from the endangered species list, following a 13-year restoration effort that helped the animal's population soar, federal officials said Thursday February 21st, 2008. I think it might be OK to delist gray wolves and remove them from federal protection. However, why do the states have to allow hunters to target the animals as soon as this fall? That really angers me!!!! Why can't we just let those gray wolves be??!! We humans are the only animals that hunt for pleasure and not for survival/food/necessity. Endangered species are not allowed to be killed or trapped by ranchers and hunters, except in situations when a human life is at stake. I understand some ranchers need to kill to protect their livestock. But for those hunters who kill animals for sports, they need to be STOPPED!

Family, the treasure you can never buy or replace

This week alone, there were 3 separate family deaths happened among my colleagues. And this year with passing of my grand father and my cat, Angelo, the reality shook me up a bit. The fact is I am getting older. That means my families are getting older as well. There are going to be more deaths happening in my life than I’ve ever willing to accept.

If I were to live up to 80, that will be 29200 days and roughly 700800 hours (I was born at noon depends on what time of day I die). If my whole life was a number, from the day I was born until I relocated to U.S.A. from Taiwan, I spent about 58400 hours with my mother. Sacredly, it is only 8%. My time with my brother will be less than 10% and I probably will spent 128480 hours with my husband, Gary. That is 18%. Other than that, I’d already spent 10% of my time at school, would spend 15% at work and possibly 35% of time sleeping! Whatever time I’ve left, I am probably doing miscellaneous stuff. Anyway, the numbers doesn’t really add up (my math skill failed me).

The point is, I want to spend more time with my family, and with the ones I loved! Most likely, my husband will share his percentage with my friends (a girl got a social life). And I am so far away from home, visiting my mother two weeks each year is practically nothing when you think of that. It really makes me sad.

Before I know it, my loved ones will slip away and I don’t want to have any regrets. I forgot where I saw it in the movie that some people prefer to die first than be the ones that are left behind with all the heartbreaks. I think I can relate to that now.

I am 31. I got time. I vow to spend more time with my family because they’re important!

Pushing Daisies

Because of where I work, I was fortunately enough to sneak preview complete Fall new TV lineups. There’re quite a few new series on ABC, Fox and NBC that I enjoyed. However, the one I am most looking forward to is Pushing Daisies, which will premiere on October 3rd at 8/7c (ABC). First of all, Jim Dale, who is best known for performing Harry Potter’s audio book series, narrated the show. I was completely mesmerized by his voice. Secondly, its story-telling style is very similar to one of my favorite French films, Amelie. The cinematography is also reminds me of Big Fish. Moreover, a fairytale-like story is written by Bryan Fuller, who also did Dead Like Me, another favorite TV show of mine. No wonder this new series is guaranteed to offer a weekly dose of delightful, heartwarming, quirky fun.

This Summer Gill, Spencer and their baby, Ali, came back to Michigan to visit us. They stayed with Grace and Jose. And we all went there to visit them. Baby, Ali, is very cute and super photogenic. I looked old and tired holding her. Ha ha...
Mieko and her baby, Arden was there, too. He wore a little kimono, so adorable. Gary will hate me for saying this. But, they temporarily made me want to have a child of my own. I even came up with the name, Kingsley William Ralph. I knew I definitely want to name my (imaginary) son, William Ralph, after Gary’s father. And I just love the name, Kingsley, from one of my favorite books, Harry Potter.

I got a new camcorder for the wedding and I purchased a new car to drive mom around for her visit, a 2007 Toyota Yaris in Meteorite Metallic. I love it. The gas mileage is awesome and it's fun to drive.

This Sunday I am taking mom to Bavarian Festival in Frankenmuth. Next week, we'll have dinner with my fiancé, Gary's mom, Laura. That will be the first time two mothers meet. Wednesday, we are going to see Detroit Tigers vs. Milwaukee Brewers in Comerica Park. Get pampered at the Spa on Friday. Then, it'll be the wedding. So exciting!

It’s finally Spring! The flowers are growing and so is our little Indie craft business, moo-moo & dumpling. There are many new events coming up that we will be participating in so please stay-tuned to new developments.

Wei's Bridal Shower

March 31st was my bridal shower. It was held at Grace's house and hosted by, Corinne and Grace, my two bridesmaids, with the help of Mieko, who was due in 3 weeks, and Sharon, who made awesome sushi. My future mother-in-law, Laura, showered me with the most amazing gift. It was unique and very creative, a beautiful white laced umbrella. When you opened it, the white strings tied with cash fell out. I was extremely surprised! Gary, my fiancé, his grandma, aunt and Rachel (his brother’s girlfriend) were also there for me. They truly make me feel welcome.

All my closed friends and colleagues were also there to celebrate with me. A very special "thank you" goes to them. I feel very loved and lucky. Thank you all!

Somthing Blue

My wedding is only 3 months away, I am pleased to finally find the "something blue!"

I am going to attach small blue crystals on the bottom of my shoes in the shape of a W and G, a small detail that only I knew about.

I just ordered crystals online, very excited!

Office Pests

Office pests are, well, in every office.

Maybe in the future they will have a urine test to identify the bad apples before they're hired but right now we still have to ignore, indulge, or otherwise tolerate one or two.

For example, in my office, let's call him the Drama Queen. He is the boss-hater, double agent, bully and whiner. He lurks in the office and sucks the energy out of a workplace.

He talks loudly about his responsibility, complaints, needs, wants and frustrations and hopes for recognitions. When people deny him an audience, he then acts like a dog, who attacks when a person turns away. He also has no patience with fellow workers and often talkes down to others like they’re idiots.

Normally, I have no quarrel with any office pests. However, I dislike double agents, hiding behind their overzealous kindness while stab you in the back. I went out with this Drama Queen for lunch once. And the experience opened my eyes. He complained incessantly about everything and everyone in the office from politics to being under-appreciated. His comments were particular harsh on coworkers he called friends. I was in shock. If the Drama Queen talks that way about his friends and boss, whom else is he gossiping?

He filled me with his detailed stories of being abused and unfairly treated by the boss. He was full of venom, he scared me enough to make me realize I better just listen patiently and keep my mouth shut.

After that luncheon, I kept my distance from the Drama Queen. But, somehow, he has the skills to spread his impacts on me and continues to give me low-grade depression by his occasional rude emails and chronic negativity.

Yet, dealing with office pests isn’t as simple as showing them the door. These individuals, annoying as they may be, often have redeeming qualities. However, working with such people is annoying and demoralizing. Trying to change his or her behaviors is tricky and almost always uncomfortable for everyone involved. So, until someone does something about it. We all have to endure Drama Queen’s existence.

Angelo is Getting a Surgery

For many months now, G-Lo was diagnosed having a tumor in his mouth. It’s removable, but the outcome is not very positive. However, G-Lo continues to look like a happy and healthy cat in spite of weight losing and increasingly growing left cheek. It hurts Gary and I to see his cute little face with a swollen cheek. Money, of course, is one of the factors that I’ve not taken G-Lo to get his tumor removed sooner. Gary and I are getting married this year. We’ve been watching every penny we spent. Luckily, it’s the tax return season. It’s not a very big refund, but it helps to pay G-Lo’s surgery. So, I am happy to say G-Lo is getting his tumor removed this Friday at 9:20AM. Even though the vet thinks the procedure may only prolong his life for few more years, it will certainly make G-Lo’s remaining life more comfortable. And to me that is money well spent!

Pan's Labyrinth

I saw a very good movie last night and it reminds me of one of my favorite foreign films, City of Lost Children, directed by French director, Jean-Pierre Jeunet. That movie is Pan's Labyrinth, a fantasy film by Mexican director, Guillermo del Toro, who has directed Hellyboy and Blade II. It's an achingly beautiful fairy tale with elements of horror – or, if you prefer, a visually stunning horror movie with a fairy-tale theme. That's only being released now. The film, which received a 22-minute standing ovation at Cannes, is both like and unlike del Toro's acclaimed horror/sci-fi flicks. I highly recommend this movie! The sound track, by Javier Navarrete, is beautiful as well. I particularly enjoy the song, Long, Long Time Ago. Did I mention Ofelia, played by Maribel Verdú, is adorable!!?

Remembering My Grandfather

This is not an obituary. I do not know when my maternal grandfather was born, nor do I know his exact age when he passed away two days ago. I do not know his career goal, achievement or dreams. But my memories of him were full of joy and kindness. And I know he was a great husband, father and grandfather. I remember his stern face, which I found frightening as a kid, and his long and lean figure. When I was at fourth grade, grandparents helped my mother's restaurant business. Grandfather would deliver carry-out by his motorcycle. On summer breaks, he would always take me along for a ride. Sometimes he would sneak to a farmer's market and buy me steamed yam (one of my favorite Taiwanese snacks). We didn't talk much. But, we had a connection. During those summers, I grew to learn behind his stern face, there's a loving and caring grandfather.

In spite of our being thousand miles apart, I loved him. He was loved. He will be missed.

This year “Friends n Families” Christmas Party is held at Michael's place as usual. We welcome some new comers this year, Akira from Japan and Alex from Taiwan (welcome)! A special thanks goes to Chris and Cathy for coming all the way from Ohio. Also thank Sharon, Yan and Mark, Yanline and Michael for joining us this year. A round of applause goes to Michael’s magnificent Christmas tree.

I hope we didn’t bore you all too much during Christmas gift exchange. If we did, please accept my apology. Next year, we’ll plan our party differently, so please join us again! I hope you at least all got a good laugh out of White Elephant (regift activity).

I had a blast with you all and am very thankful to have friends like you. I look forward to many more get-togethers with everyone.
